A 4-year-old black Lab named Midnight is being credited with saving an elderly neighbor's life after he discovered her lying in the snow during last week's dangerous cold snap in Minnesota.
According to Tim Curfman, his alert pup found their 87-year-old neighbor when temperatures were hovering at about one degree below zero. Curfman and Midnight were taking out the garbage when he noticed that his dog was acting strange.
"She had her ears perked up looking at me. She doesn’t normally do that. Sometimes you get that feeling something’s up," Curfman told WCCO.
Curfman followed the 4-year-old Lab out to a spot on the other side of the house where they discovered their elderly neighbor, Noreen, who had fallen in the snow while trying to fill a bird feeder.
"We figured she was out there at least a half an hour," said Curfman. "She could not have gotten up because her gloves had gotten wet and she didn’t have enough strength in her fingers to push herself up. Nothing around the corner to get up and get a hold of either."
Curfman got Noreen get inside where his wife helped their 87-year-old neighbor change into some dry clothes. Fortunately, Noreen did not have any serious injuries and was able to avoid frostbite, WCCO reported.
“We’ve been very proud of her because it’s not every dog that pays attention to things like this,” said Curfman. “And she got so many treats it was a shame.”
