Jo Dee Messina had to âreturn the love,â after Kelly Clarkson covered one of the country superstarâs 90s hits on her show earlier this week.
Messina took the stage with âSince U Been Gone,â an unforgettable single that appeared on Clarksonâs second studio album, Breakaway, in 2004. Karl Martin Sandberg and Lukasz Gottwald wrote the powerhouse breakup anthem that remains one of the most well-known hits of the original American Idol championâs decades-long career.
Messinaâs spin on âSince U Been Goneâ arrives shortly after Clarksonâs rendition of âA Lesson In Leavin,â written by Randy Goodrum and Brent Maher, during her Kellyoke performance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. Late legend Dottie West originally released the song in the late 70s, and Messina released it in the late 90s on her Iâm Alright record. Messina said as she shared Clarksonâs performance on her Instagram story, âLove this so much, [Kelly Clarkson]!â
âThat song is âLesson in Leavin,â originally recorded by Dottie West in the late 70s, which I found out this morning because my whole life I thought it was just (an) original song from Jo Dee Messina, who I grew up listening to,â Clarkson said after her performance. âThat song marked a historic week⌠Not only did Dottieâs song land in the top spot, it was the first time ever all top five positions were held by five female singers. Thatâs something great to note during this Womenâs History Month.â
Messinaâs cover of âSince U Been Goneâ arrives shortly after she released âSome Bridges,â the first track from her upcoming studio album. She said in a recent interview with iHeartCountry that this chapter is âcovering a whole lot.â It covers love, life, pain, fight, learning and living. âWhen they [fans] listen to the album, I hope they feel seen, first of all, and not alone in this life because everybody hurts and everybody celebrates,â Messina said. â(There are) tons of topics on the record. I hope they feel hopeful and seen and understood.â Messinaâs new album, her first in 10 years, will arrive this summer.
