Jo Dee Messina had to “return the love,” after Kelly Clarkson covered one of the country superstar’s 90s hits on her show earlier this week.

Messina took the stage with “Since U Been Gone,” an unforgettable single that appeared on Clarkson’s second studio album, Breakaway, in 2004. Karl Martin Sandberg and Lukasz Gottwald wrote the powerhouse breakup anthem that remains one of the most well-known hits of the original American Idol champion’s decades-long career.

Messina’s spin on “Since U Been Gone” arrives shortly after Clarkson’s rendition of “A Lesson In Leavin,’ written by Randy Goodrum and Brent Maher, during her Kellyoke performance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. Late legend Dottie West originally released the song in the late 70s, and Messina released it in the late 90s on her I’m Alright record. Messina said as she shared Clarkson’s performance on her Instagram story, “Love this so much, [Kelly Clarkson]!”

“That song is ‘Lesson in Leavin,’ originally recorded by Dottie West in the late 70s, which I found out this morning because my whole life I thought it was just (an) original song from Jo Dee Messina, who I grew up listening to,” Clarkson said after her performance. “That song marked a historic week… Not only did Dottie’s song land in the top spot, it was the first time ever all top five positions were held by five female singers. That’s something great to note during this Women’s History Month.”

Messina’s cover of “Since U Been Gone” arrives shortly after she released “Some Bridges,” the first track from her upcoming studio album. She said in a recent interview with iHeartCountry that this chapter is “covering a whole lot.” It covers love, life, pain, fight, learning and living. “When they [fans] listen to the album, I hope they feel seen, first of all, and not alone in this life because everybody hurts and everybody celebrates,” Messina said. “(There are) tons of topics on the record. I hope they feel hopeful and seen and understood.” Messina’s new album, her first in 10 years, will arrive this summer.
